OpenCycle launches a free virtual cycling platform with roads that keep going
OpenCycle today launched at opencycle.net, giving indoor cyclists a free way to explore procedural worlds, ride real GPX courses, complete structured workouts and meet friends on the same generated road — directly in a web browser.
Instead of confining every ride to a fixed map, OpenCycle builds the road ahead as the rider moves. The launch includes 31 worlds, ranging from mountain and desert roads to playful places such as Mars and a paper model. Riders can also describe a setting to an AI assistant and paste the resulting editable world specification into the app.
GPX imports reproduce a route's turns and gradients, making it possible to rehearse an event course indoors. OpenCycle connects to smart trainers, power meters, speed and cadence sensors, and heart-rate straps in supported Chromium browsers. Structured workouts, ERG targets, small-group invite links, drafting and standard .fit file exports are included.
“Indoor riding made more outdoor rides possible for me,” said founder Alex Wormuth. “I wanted the indoor version to feel less like repeating a course and more like wondering what is around the next corner. Because OpenCycle runs in the browser and most of the work happens on the rider's own machine, I can make the whole experience free.”
OpenCycle currently works best in Chrome and Edge on desktop or Android. A free account is required. Safari, Firefox and native iOS browsers cannot pair trainers because they do not implement Web Bluetooth. OpenCycle is designed for solo and small-group rides today and does not yet offer mass racing, leagues or leaderboards.
